All of our pieces, whether made of Burl, Antler or Fur, are crafted entirely by hand by our family at EagleSong. Signed and dated, they are all certified “Alaska Made”.
What is a burl? A burl is a bump that a tree forms to heal itself after an injury or sickness. The swirled grain in a burl is excellent for carving, and creates a harder and much more stable wood to work with…not to mention the gorgeous patterns and organic shape! The wood is carved and harvested entirely at our Alaskan Family Homestead. We do not turn our bowls, but carve each one individually, to follow the natural contours of the burl.
We are able to prune burls off our trees without damaging them, much like pruning a branch. No two burls are ever the same, so each piece is unique. All our burls are dried for a minimum of 3 years before we start work on them. Each crack and fissure is part of the uniqueness of the character of the burl. We are confident that any cracks in the burls/bowls are stable; they carry a lifetime guarantee.
Because of the handcrafted nature of our products each creation is one of a kind. There is no such thing as ‘standard’ for us. We are able to create custom pieces for your individual preferences. We would love to work with you to create your own unique piece of Alaska.
