EagleSong Peonies, Like No Other Flower

Peony Cut Flowers

EagleSong Peony Farm is situated in the Susitna Valley at the north base of Mt. Susitna. Our fields look upon North America’s tallest peak, Denali. As beautiful as the region is this is not the reason for our farm’s location. It is all about the climate…an average of 14 feet of snowfall, volcanic rich soils and mild summer temperatures allow us to harvest our extraordinary peony stems from early July to mid-August.

Growing some of the world’s most exquisite peony stems means nothing if you can’t get them to market at their peak. This is where EagleSong excels. Our stems are harvested by hand, chilled and flown to our pack house facility at Anchorage International Airport.

Our Anchorage Airport facility is strategically located within a block of the major air carriers and 2 blocks from the FedEx and UPS hubs.  No peony producer in Alaska can move Alaska peonies to U.S. customers faster than EagleSong.

Our peony cut flowers are harvested and shipped fresh to you in July/August. To learn more about our popular farm to door subscription program or sample box, head over to our online store. Peony Cut Flower Care

Watch Peonies go from Bud to Bloom!

  1. Carefully unpack your Alaska Grown peonies from their box
  2. Fill your clean container of choice with fresh water
  3. Make sure to remove leaves that will fall below the water line because leaves can create bacteria in the water and shorten the life of your peonies
  4. With sharp scissors, shears or knife cut your stems at least 1" from the bottom at a diagonal and place in your prepared water filled containers
  5. Change the water in your containers and recut your stems every 2 - 3 days in order to extend the life of your blooms
  6. Do not place in direct sunlight or in hot environments as they will shorten the life of your blooms

Peony Roots

Our hardy Alaskan Peony Root stock now grows in many gardens around the country. Every year we offer a select variety of peony roots, shipped in fall, to home gardeners in the USA.

Peonies produce their extravagant display every year, regardless of weather, because they are among the most durable and longest-lived plants. They have no natural enemies, no exacting cultural requirements beyond full sun and neutral to slightly sweet soil, and they shrug off cold. After bloom is complete, you are left with a handsome mound of glossy, deep green foliage that will happily anchor the next sequence of bloom in the neighborhood. Peonies make superior cut flowers, lasting more than a week if cut in full bud.

All EagleSong peonies are herbaceous (or bush) peonies. Hardiness zone: 3-7S/8W, shipped bare root, 3-5 eyes. Roots are shipped the first week of September. They require a dormancy period every winter to bloom. Peonies are fairly low maintenance flowers, but they will take a few years to establish themselves.

The first and second year after a root is planted the bush will mainly concentrate on establishing a strong root system. It is in the third year that you will start seeing a substantial production of flowers. The upside to this is that once a plant has a good strong root system it can provide over 50 years of enjoyment. Fully developed plants/root systems can be divided and passed on for a whole new generation. Truly an heirloom bloom.

Soil Preparation:
  • Loosen soil to accommodate a hole approximately 1 ½’ deep by 2’ wide

  • With more than one root we recommend planting approximately 2’ apart

  • If soil has a high clay content or is very dense, mix in some potting soil or compost

  • If soil is acidic thoroughly mix in 1 cup of dolomite lime per root

  • Back fill the hole with your loose dirt, compost, and/or lime mix to 6’’ below the surface. Place 2 tablespoons of fertilizer (we recommend a balanced fertilizer like 16-16-16) in the hole and cover with dirt to 3’’ below the surface.

Planting:
  • Plant roots as soon as possible when you receive them from us. This gives the feeder roots a chance to become established before spring growth. The roots will keep in the packing materials for a period while you prepare their spot.
  • Place peony root with the eyes (fresh growth buds, about the size of a lentil) at the top and the roots down or at an angle
  • Cover the eyes of the peony root with only 2’’ of soil on top after water settles in
  • Reset root closer to surface if needed
  • Water thoroughly after planting
  • Placing a marker will allow you to know where your roots are come spring
On-Going Care:
  • Water occasionally the first year and in dry spells after they are well established

  • Watering will help your plant develop more rapidly

  • We do recommend pinching off the buds the first year to assist root establishment

  • In the fall cut plant to the ground (you only need the root for perennial growth) and remove foliage from the area; this reduces chance of fungal spores clinging to foliage and causing disease in the spring

  • We suggest mulching in the fall, but it is important that in the spring, after the last freeze, you remove the mulch. Remember, peonies only want 2’’ of material above them when growing

  • Botrytis is a fungal disease to look out for. Symptoms include sudden wilting leaves, stems rotting off at ground level, and buds turning black.

  • If identified: apply fungicide per label directions and/or contact your local garden center for control measures as soon as possible

Cutting Flowers:

EagleSong peonies make ideal cut flowers for show, drying, or just for brightening up a table. Here are a few things to consider once your peonies start blooming:

  • Early morning is the best time to cut flowers, while the buds are still cool
  • Cut the bud when it feels like a large, firm marshmallow ( this greatly extends the vase life of the flower)
  • Place in cool water and remove all leaves that are below water level
  • Cut stems again underwater as air blocks the water uptake when stems are cut out of water
  • Keeping blooms cool and out of direct sunlight will increase vase life
  • For the health of the plant, we generally cut no more than 50% of the flowers off of a single bush
